Walkers, cyclists and horse riders are to benefit from a new multi-user trail across Pembrokeshire.

The trail, which is being developed by Pembrokeshire County Council, will eventually run from Wiseman's Bridge near Saundersfoot to Cardigan.

It is hoped that it will tempt more people out into the countryside.

Work on a section from Templeton to Blackpool Mill has just been completed using over 3,000 tonnes of recycled stone supplied by National Grid following construction of its Milford Haven to Aberdulais natural gas pipeline.

National Grid has also provided funding for interpretation signage, which will promote each section of the route, highlighting places of interest along the way.

In addition, thanks to support from the MOD, a new circular route has also been created at Templeton Airfield, using more of the recycled stone.

This new route is expected to be especially popular as the relatively flat land is ideal for those seeking more gentle exercise, safe off-road cycling or horse riding.

Deputy leader and cabinet member for highways and planning, Clr. Jamie Adams said the council was grateful to the National Grid and the MOD for their support.

"We hope the trail, which is based on established public rights of way, will provide greater access for everyone, tourists and local people, and promote a healthier lifestyle - as well as offering opportunities for the rural community to benefit from visitor spending."

National Grid senior project manager, Martin Kinsey, said they appreciated that their construction works were an inconvenience to communities along the pipeline route, especially with the increased volume and size of traffic using local roads.

"Supporting projects such as this is our way of saying 'thank you' to the community for their tolerance and understanding," he said.

The project has received funding through the Rural Development Plan for Wales (2006-2013), which is funded by the Welsh Assembly Government and the European Agricultural Fund for Rural Development.
