The fifth annual Tenby AFC Spring Sevens took place at the Clicketts last Saturday, in glorious sunshine, which added to the overall success of the event.
Twenty-six teams from St. Clears, Hundleton, Clarbeston Road, Camrose, Templeton, Pentyrch (Cardiff), Carmarthen, Treharris (Merthyr) and Tenby took part in the tournament for the Under 8s, Under 10s and Under 12 year olds.
Credit must go to all the managers of the teams for the high standard of football played and the manner in which each player conducted themselves.
The Under 8s age group was played in a 'round robin' of six teams with Tenby '8' being the eventual winners and St. Clears runners-up. The player of the tournament, voted for by the referees, was Kiran Lewis, of St. Clears.
The Under 10s played two pools of five teams, again in a 'round robin' format, with the winners and runners-up of each pool going through to the semi-finals.
In Pool A, Tenby '10' came first, with Pentyrch second and in Pool B Carmarthen Town were first and St. Clears second.
In the semi-finals, Tenby '10' edged out St. Clears 2-0, while Pentyrch beat a strong Carmarthen Town side 1-0. The final between Tenby '10' and Pentyrch saw the Cardiff side avenge their defeat in the pool games by winning one goal to nil. The player of the final was Lloyd Thomas, of Tenby.
The Under 12s section was played in the same format as the 10s. Winners of Pool A were Treharris, with Camrose runners-up and in Pool B, Tenby Sharks were the winners and Hundleton were second.
The first semi-final between Treharris and Hundleton ended in a 0-0 draw which, after extra-time, Treharris won 3-2 on penalties. Similarly, the second semi-final between Camrose and Tenby Sharks ended 1-1, this time Camrose proving the sharp shooters by winning on penalties again after extra-time, 3-1.
Nothing could separate the finalists, Treharris and Camrose, with the scores locked at 0-0 after extra-time, so they had to endure their second penalty shoot-out. It was the Merthyr based club, Treharris, who kept their nerve to record a 3-2 victory and become champions of the Under12s. The player of the final was awarded to Shaun Phillips, of Camrose.
The presentation ceremony took place straight after the finals, where MC Steve Briers thanked all the managers and players for the sporting way in which all the games were played; the ladies who had helped with the refreshments; Annie and Jessie in the results caravan; Darren, James, Lewis, Jack and Bobby for manning the car parks and collecting the results card; and especially the hard working Tenby AFC committee for preparing the pitches and field prior to the day.
He then called upon the Tenby chairman, Norman Hanlon, to present the trophies to all the winners, runners-up and player of each final. A bottle of bubbly was also presented to each winning manager and to the two Pembrokeshire League referees, Alan Buckfield and Gwilym Lewis.
Steve not only thanked Alan and Gwilym for their services on the day, but all the Tenby referees, Steve Maytum, Deryn Brace, Dai Meyrick, Steve Briers, Peter Horsley and the ever-so-brown Jammy James, who were each presented with a tournament T-shirt.
Tenby AFC would like to thank Ann Rowell and Paula Otton for organising the helpers and refreshments; Carl, Matt and Merv for the tent, ropes etc; P & I Scaffolding; Tenby Leisure Centre for the use of their car park; the Night Owl and Hillings, of Tenby, for sponsoring all the trophies; and the catering sponsors Skelfayre, Manorbier Bakery and Capital Roasters. All your help and support was invaluable.
