A pioneering computer club for girls has been launched at a Pembrokeshire School. Ysgol Brynconin's CC4G club at Llandissilio is the first Welsh medium club of its kind in Wales. Launched last Monday, the club aims to show girls that computers can be fun, as well as a pathway to future success. Clr. Islwyn Howells, cabinet member for children, young people, Welsh language and Learning, said, "Much has been written about boys and their interest in computers but it appears to be of less interest to young girls. "If women are to play a full role in the IT workforce of the future then their interest has to be stimulated at an early age. "CC4G clubs aim to encourage girls to take an interest in computers and lessen the gap between their skills and that of boys. "This new club at Ysgol Brynconin is particularly exciting as it is the first Welsh CC4G club in Wales." The CC4G initiative is funded by the Welsh Assembly Government following concerns at the lack of girls taking up ICT at secondary level. Figures show that only 20 per cent of ICT professionals are women. The CC4G club at Brynconin is aimed at Year 6 pupils and will be held every Monday night under the guidance of a Learning Pembrokeshire Tutor. Year 10 pupils at Ysgol Y Preseli will also act as mentors.
