A Pembrokeshire girls football team scored international success this summer. The Pembrokeshire Panthers won the international Cercle Melle Under 16 Football Tournament in Belgium. It was the first time that a team from the UK had been invited to the long established tournament and the Panthers - made up of Pembrokeshire girls attending the Sports Pembrokeshire/Swansea City Girls football coaching centre in Tenby - trained hard for six months to be ready. Although the team won both the Ian Rush Football U15 competition and the Aberaeron tournament last year, their latest competition was in another league with only eight teams -mostly from France and Belgium - invited. The Pembrokeshire girls won their group before beating DVC Zuid-West Vlaanderen in the final by three goals to nil. Clr. Rob Lewis, Pembrokeshire County Council cabinet member for sport and leisure, praised the girls for their win and the hard-work behind it. "The Panthers have a growing a growing and deserved reputation for playing high quality football which is often far beyond their years," he said. "Pembrokeshire can be rightly proud of these ambassadors and great things can be expected of this team in the years ahead."
