THE Fourcroft Hotel, Tenby, has a very special performance arranged for Saturday, May 11, when the extraordinary Indian sitarist Purbayan Chatterjee gives a recital of Indian classical music.

Purbayan Chatterjee is one of the youngest and most gifted sitarists playing North Indian classical and light classical music in the world today. He is seen as the sitarist for the 21st century.

Together with the tabla player Kumar Bose, he will take you on a transcendental journey into the soul of Indian music. At only 26, Purbayan has become the leading sitarist of his generation whose prodigious talent has been recognised across the globe. His playing blends calm serenity with technical brilliance and maturity beyond his years, contrasting fiery fingerwork with purity and charm, to produce music that is both lyrical and bursting with energy.

The rapport between Purbayan and his stunning tabla player Kumar Bose is quite astonishing and produces thrilling exchanges between the two instruments.

In the tradition of Indian classical music, Purbayan was taught by his father, also a respected sitar player and teacher. His training began at five-years-old when his father had a very small sitar made for him. At the age of 13, Purbayan was giving solo concerts in Calcutta, and after winning many prizes and gold medals at competitions across India, he embarked on an international career when he was 19.

Now his talent has been recognised by audiences in USA and Europe where he gives concerts and workshops. This year his UK tour includes starring appearances at Brighton and Bath International music festivals, and at The South Bank Centre in London.

Purbayan has a special mission to explain the details of ragas to western audiences and always draws first time listeners in to the music. The performance at the Fourcroft in Tenby will be the only Pembrokeshire concert this year. The concert starts at 9 pm and tickets are £10 per person available from the hotel by calling (01834) 842886.
