Plans for a new multi-million pound mixed-use scheme in Tenby look set to be given the thumbs up by members of the Pembrokeshire Coast National Park Authority's development management committee, when they are discussed at a meeting next Wednesday.

National Park officers are recommending approval (subject to conditions) for the latest plans submitted by South Terrace Properties Limited for the scheme on the site of the former Royal Gatehouse Hotel which was destroyed by a fire back in 2008.

The scheme consists of seven separate applications, with plans designed by C2J Architects.

The last set of plans for the scheme were unanimously refused by the authority's development management committee back in July of last year.

As well as proposals for a new hotel on the former Gatehouse site, the latest applications again include plans for adjoining properties at Milford House and Kent House, the Royal Playhouse Cinema and land at Clifton Rock.

Further proposals include the redevelopment of the Royal Lion Hotel in White Lion Street, and units at the Delphi Apartments in South Parade.

In recommending approval for the plans, the National Park officer's report states that the proposal for the Gatehouse site provides a "once in a lifetime opportunity to re-develop a key site in Tenby town that will provide the catalyst for overall regeneration of the area".

The report also says that the proposal will provide "a mix of uses that will provide both housing (affordable and market), employment, tourist opportunities and leisure uses that are conducive to Tenby's economic and social wellbeing" while it adds that the design of the scheme is considered to sit well with the town's historic vernacular buildings conservation area, and the adjacent listed building, whilst also providing a modern and bold approach to the secondary frontage of the site.
