What a busy year it has been at Tenby's St. Teilo's School. Here is just a recap of the activities and the money raised and spent at the school during the last term.
EARLY YEARS SPORTS
In true Olympic style, a great day was enjoyed by children, parents and teachers alike. The children marched onto the field carrying the flame of Olympic spirit. Events included crawling, sprinting, brick races, hoop races, throw the bean bag and the mini marathon raced to the music of Chariots of Fire.
The fathers' race was won by Mr. Joe Williams in the monkey race and the lucky winner of the mums' race was Mrs. Delyth Truman in the brick race.
Money raised on the day was £120.
A special thank you to Steve and Suzanne Wilson for setting up the field, Mr. Burke for scoring and the helpers who handed out the rosettes and the friends who served refreshments, especially Sarah and Julia.
The winners of the medals on the day were 'Gold' Brandon Taylor Monaghan, 'Silver' Ryan Morgan and 'Bronze' Lloyd Hughes and Richard Tebbutt.
BINGO NIGHT
A fun night was had by all at the Fountain Head, Pentlepoir, raising a brilliant £180 for the school. Many prizes were donated by local businesses and thanks go to these and Andrew and Sarah and staff of the Fountain head for use of their premises. Thanks also go to Richard Morgan, the bingo caller, who put in a great performance on the night.
SPORTS DAY
This was a great day, with the children and parents cheering for their house to win. The scores on the day were very close, but the winner was St. Teresa, followed by Our Lady, then St. Josephs. Well done to all who took part, the children, parents, and Mrs. Nicholls, who coaches the children for sports throughout the year. An excellent £227 was raised on the day and a big thank you to all who helped with refreshments and light lunches.
BARBECUE
The weather was brilliant for the annual barbecue at Tenby Harbour. Nearly 200 tickets were sold to adults and children and a great day was had by all, with the last of the stragglers leaving at 11.30 pm. Beach games were provided by Mrs. Nicholls and Angharad.
Mrs. Nicholls deserves a special thank you for these games as she had just completed a tiring residential week at the watersports with Years 5 and 6. Their efforts were appreciated by both parents and children alike. Thank you also to the Sailing Club for use of their facilities, Belmont Court for sponsoring the bouncy castle and to the harbourmaster, Mr. Carl Evans.
Thank you also to all the parents who provided the salads and Sue Brindley and Leo's who donated rolls. Thank you to Mike and Simon for the cooking and all the local businesses that came up trumps again to provide raffle prizes.
Raffle prize winners were Mrs. Watkins (a meal at the Balti Cellar), Poppy Brace (£10 voucher from Discount Sports) and Angharad Hollinger (family ticket to Folly Farm).
This event was designed as a social occasion by the Friends of St. Teilo's as a tribute to all parents of the school who continually give up their time, energy, money and support throughout the year. Thank you.
SUMMER FETE
The weather was good again for the school fete. A total of £318 was raised via various stalls, toys, cakes/sweets, books, ice-cream, nail varnish painting, teas/coffees. A good atmosphere was abundant as parents sat and chatted as their kids spent the money.
The teachers would like to thank all the children and parents for their support for this event.
A raffle was held for six hanging baskets which Class 1 had made. Mrs. Blackledge would like to thank Mike and Del Evans for helping to make these up.
FOOTBALL DRAW
A week's holiday for a family of six at Quaywest, Newquay, was kindly donated by Mr. Darren Griffiths (caravan sales manager). It was decided to have a football draw, raising a wonderful £400.
Winner was Mrs. Shirley Poole, who chose Darlington (blue card).
Thank you to everyone who supported this, especially Newquay Holiday Park, Tenby Rugby Club and Belmont Nursing Home, whose patrons managed to fill a board, and everyone who bought a square.
A special thank you to Lynn, who organised all the boards, photo and selling of the squares.
As can be seen, it has indeed been a busy year. This has been combined with a school inspection and the achievement of obtaining the Quality Mark. The teachers and the Friends would like to thank all the parents, children and all the local businesses who continually support the school, including:
Belgrave Hotel; Atlantic Hotel; Jeanette and Phillip Harris (Saundersfoot); Pam Pam; Giltar Hotel; Plantagenet House; Mews Bistro; Robin's Den; The Reef; Clarence Hotel; Bay of Bengal; Balti Cellar Indian Restaurant; Kook-a-Ba (Saundersfoot); JT's Burger Bar; Crumbs and Cream; Janina Louise; Andrew Price; Boots Chemist; Chaps Cabs (Saundersfoot); Londis; Peacocks; Tenby Book Shop; Ocean Commotion; Folly Farm (Begelly); Heron's Brook (Narberth); Heatherton (St. Florence); Manor House (St. Florence); Oakwood; Tenby Leisure Centre; Torch Theatre (Milford Haven); Paula Smith; Four Seasons; Wisebuys; Discount Sports; Texaco; Ex-Servicemen's Club; Andrew Rees Butchers; Allied Medicare; Maria Smith.
As well as monies to be spent on musical equipment, it is also hoped to use funds to buy a new reading scheme, cd player, and to extend resources, to name but a few.
SKYDIVE
On Sunday, August 26, Julia Sharp undertook a sponsored skydive at Pembrey in order to raise funds for musical equipment for the school.
The day arrived with clear blue skies - perfect for skydiving. Arriving at Pembrey with an army of supporters, Julia began her ground training for the task ahead. Her instructor, Carl Williams, proprietor of Skydive Wales, took her through each step of the jump.
At 1.30 pm they boarded their aircraft together with a skydive videographer and took to the skies. As a special treat, Julia was flown down to Tenby and out over Caldey, before heading back to Pembrey to undertake the jump.
At approximately 2 pm and at an altitude of 10,000 feet, both Julia and Carl exited the aircraft and began their 5,000 feet freefall decent, which took 35 seconds only! At 5,000 feet, Carl activated the parachute and they drifted down to terra firma.
Julia has described the day as the 'best thing she has ever undertaken' and is now hooked on the sport.
"It was such an adrenaline rush and yet very peaceful all at the same time," she said.
In January 2002, she will accompany Skydive Wales to Barcelona to complete her training, which will make her a certified skydiver in her own right. She then hopes that she can undertake an instructors' course and give others the benefit of an experience unsurpassed.
To date, Julia has raised a total of £1,115. Many sincere thanks go to all the local establishments such as Andrew Price Hair Salon; Andrew Rees Butchers; Andrew Swales, Mews Bistro; Allied Medicare; and to all the parents of St. Teilo's; family and friends who have given so generously in this sponsorship.
