Although Tenby's historic St. Margaret's Fair has been called off for this year, it still seems likely that there will be a fun fair on The Salterns this July after all.
Tenby Town Council last week agreed to suspend the ancient Charter Fair for this July, but it now appears that their fair agent is going to press on regardless and arrange a fun fair on the site over the same period.
"Pembrokeshire County Council have granted a licence for the fair for the period," confirmed Mayor of Tenby, Clr Mrs. Christine Brown, this week.
"The fair agent, Mr. John Evans, has indicated that he will be seeking to hold a fair on The Salterns this July, but it will not be held under the auspices of our ancient charter."
"As far as we are concerned we have suspended the charter and any fair held, and its operation, will not be the responsibility of Tenby Town Council this year," Clr. Mrs. Brown continued.
"We are concerned that the fair is not what it once was and considered that the costs to the council were too prohibitive - it would cost in the region of £150 to £200 just to hire a band for the opening ceremony."
Clr. Mrs. Brown added that the town council were hoping to revive the charter fair next year with a "more old-fashioned theme."
