The fourth St. David's Food and Craft Festival in Saundersfoot has been hailed the best yet. Organised by the Saundersfoot Chamber for Tourism and sponsored by WAG and Pembrokeshire County Council, the two-day festival on Saturday and Sunday was another outstanding success. Over 2,000 people passed through the doors of the marquee - packed with stalls from food and craft producers from Pembrokeshire and other parts of Wales - on Saturday, while on Sunday, another good crowd braved the torrential weather to join in the celebrations. The festival also incorporated the seventh annual Cawl Cooking Championship of the World and Elsewhere. The event was hotly contested by nine of the village's restaurants, hotels, cafes and pubs, all serving up their own specially developed cawl recipes. A total of 182 people took part in the ever-popular Cawl Trail, with Paul and Sue from the Silver Strand and Tearooms (formerly known as Strand Antiques Tea Rooms) being voted the winners for the third year running. Their recipe is a closely guarded secret; all they will reveal is that it has been handed down through the family from Sue's grandmother! The organisers said the results this year were very close, with the runners-up being The Mermaid on The Strand and first-time entrants BB's Restaurant. Winner of the St. David's Day poster competition was Brydie Allen, of Year 2, Saundersfoot CP School. Saundersfoot School also won the overall schools competition. Entertainment was provided by The Vagrant Crew and In Tune, while a display of vehicles from Milford Haven Classic Car Club was a welcome addition to the festivities. Said one of the organisers, Madge Wills: "The festival was excellent and everyone said it was the best ever."

Mr. and Mrs. Rogers from Llantwit Fardre and granddaughters Hannah and Eve sample a bowl of cawl at the Royal Oak Inn, while chef Michael Skirving looks on.
