The Amroth Arms hosted a fantastic evening for Pembrokeshire Macmillan volunteers and partners at a dinner on Friday (writes Pauline Davies).
Fundraising manager, Sue Reece, presented a certificate to our oldest serving member, and our honorary president, Penelope Meyrick. This was for the longevity of our fundraising work in Pembrokeshire. Initially, with the two groups of Pembroke and Saundersfoot/Tenby and in the last 10 years, the joint Pembrokeshire Committee.
Over the 45-year period, £1.8m has been raised by Macmillan volunteers, which we believe to be a record in Wales. Such a staggering amount raised to help sufferers of cancer across Pembrokeshire. Both Dilys Hanmer and Penelope Meyrick led the individual committees and it is to their dedication, enthusiasm and commitment over the years that we must attribute the continued influence amongst the current membership.
Funding in the earlier days was all about raising funds to pay for our specialist Macmillan nurses, trained specifically in palliative care. Over more recent years, the strategy of Macmillan has been to address the cancer journey and support people affected by cancer from diagnosis throughout their journey. Today, more and more cancer patients surviving and living longer due to early diagnosis, new developments in treatments and after-care. Macmillan has information centres in both hospitals in Pembrokeshire where advisers offer support and signposting; a vast number of specialist clinicians in our hospitals; and a phone helpline for patients and families needing information or support.

On Saturday, the current committee held a Derby Day at the Amroth Arms. It was a beautiful sunny day and Amroth was at its picturesque best. A stunning £1,604.72 was raised on the day and included the earlier selling of Derby Day raffle tickets. Grateful thanks to the Amroth Arms for providing lovely food, to our volunteers and to all who bought tickets and supported on the day. All your support is much appreciated.
Our next event is Friday, August 17, on Saundersfoot Harbour for Welsh cakes!
