A Food and Health Strategy for Care Homes and the Community Meals Services in Pembrokeshire has been launched by local Health Challenge partners.

Details of the strategy - which provides recommendations for food and fluids in residential care homes and for the meals provides by community services, such as Meals on Wheels - were outlined at a well-attended event at the Withybush Conference Centre in Haverfordwest.

Representatives from local care homes were given the opportunity to try out some of the nutritional screening tools available and quiz employees from Belmont Court Care Home, in Tenby, and Sunnybank Care Home, in Narberth.

They were also provided with comprehensive guidance material, including background information, model policies, resource lists and contact information.

Pembrokeshire County Councillor Sian James, cabinet member for the voluntary sector and health and well-being, said: "It was really gratifying to get such a positive response to all the work that has been done so far in helping to establish standards for the food and health of elderly residents in care homes.

"We now have the opportunity of turning attention towards provision for the elderly mental ill and those receiving support from the community meals service."

Health Challenge Pembrokeshire will provide further feedback on the event, to those who attended, and make resource packs available those homes unable send representatives.

Health Challenge Pembrokeshire is a partnership of organisations working together to improve health and well-being. It includes Pembrokeshire County Council and Pembrokeshire Local Health Board.
