Whitland 8 pts.
UWIC 13
Whitland's lack of control at the scrum and lineout and basic errors were at the heart of this first loss of the season at home to UWIC in Swalec League Division One West on Saturday.
The students themselves did not perform as they can, but returned home to Cardiff with the win under their belts.
At the break, UWIC led by six points to three, with outside-half Rhydian Morris kicking a penalty and dropping a goal, while for the home side, fullback Scott Newton kicked a penalty, although just before the break, centre Gary Evans did go close to a try.
Eight minutes into the second half, after taking a quick penalty, UWIC scored their only try through left winger Tom James, which Morris converted to extend the visitors' lead to 13 points to three.
It was not until the last move of the game that Whitland did eventually score a try, with winger Dion Thomas going over in the top corner to give the Borderers a losing bonus point and leave the final score 13 points to eight to the students of UWIC.
