Returning Mayor of Tenby, Clr. Mrs. Sue Lane, has been hailed 'a first class ambassador' for the town. Clr. Mrs. Lane was reinstated as the town's first citizen for a record-breaking seventh year at the town council's annual general meeting on Friday. Also chairman of Tenby in Bloom, she was proposed for the job by Clr. Mike Evans who said she had all the qualities to be Mayor, being hardworking, conscientious, trustyworthy, well-meaning, respected and having pride in the town. "The respect I have for you is tremendous," he said. "Personally, I see you as one of the greatest ambassadors the town has. You live and breath Tenby through and through." Clr. Laurence Blackhall seconded the proposition. "You would think that when somebody is being elected for the seventh time, you would run out of words to second the proposal, but that is not the case with Clr. Mrs. Lane. Anyone who has watched her in her role knows what great energy, enthusiasm and determination she brings to the role," he said. "As Mayor, she's a great ambassador for the town and shows tremendous determination in everything she does for the town. Clr. Mrs. Lane is constantly bringing new ideas to the table to maintain Tenby as the beautiful place it is. "With all her ambitions and new ideas, Clr. Mrs. Lane is always going for gold - for Tenby in Bloom and gold for Tenby." Clr. Mrs. Lane's first job was to elect her Deputy Mayor. She proposed that head of music at Tenby's Greenhill School, Clr. Paul Rapi, serve a second term, too, and was seconded by Clr. Mrs. Tish Rossiter. "Clr. Rapi is a great asset to the town council. He gives invaluable advice regarding schools and many other subjects and his wicked sense of humour lightens the mood after a lengthy debate. He is the perfect Deputy Mayor to Clr. Mrs. Lane." Next on the agenda was the appointment of the Sergeant at Arms and Sergeant at Mace. Clr. Mrs. Christine Brown, seconded by Clr. Mrs. Caroline Thomas proposed that Mr. John Morgan continue for his 17th year as Sergeant at Arms, while new recruit, Ernie Vokes, be appointed Sergeant at Mace. The Mayor appointed Father Michael Fewell, new priest at Holyrood and St. Teilo's RC Church, as Mayor's chaplain, Miss Sian Waters as Mayoress and Mrs. Sarah Rapi as Deputy Mayoress. The vote of thanks to the retiring Mayor was proposed by Clr. Mrs. Caroline Thomas who had the 'impossible' task of thanking Clr. Mrs. Lane, although she was not actually retiring! "Clr. Mrs. Lane is an amazing, inspirational person," she said. "She travels all over the county, the country and the world to promote Tenby. "She is so busy all the time making Tenby an interesting and exciting place to live and visit. A huge vote of thanks for another year of devoted service to our town." Clr. Mrs. Thomas was seconded by Clr. Mrs. Trisha Putwain, before Clr. Mrs. Lane added her own thanks, paying tribute to her fellow councillors, the town clerk and deputy town clerk, mace bearers and her family for their support. She also thanked Father Owen McGreal, who was her chaplain, and the many organisations for inviting her to their events. A civic dinner to mark the 625th Mayor-making then followed, when grace was said by Father Fewell and the loyal toast was given by the town clerk, Mr. Andrew Davies. A toast to the Mayor and town of Tenby was proposed by Mr. Phil Thompson MBE, who felt 'Tenby couldn't be in safer hands'. "I am really pleased for Tenby, you are Mayor for the coming year," he said. Clr. Mrs. Lane responded saying that being Mayor of Tenby was a 'huge honour'. "Tenby is not only the jewel in the crown, but the best in the west," she said. A toast to the guests was proposed by Clr. Dr. Peter Easy, while Mr. David Lewis completed the evening's speeches by responding on behalf of the guests. "The town council performs an important duty in the town," he said. "You are doing a good job and you are appreciated," he added, describing Clr. Mrs. Lane as a 'first class ambassador for the town'. The Mayor-Making celebrations concluded with the civic ball with music from Tuxedo Funktion.
