On Saturday, three Army Cadets from Haverfordwest Detachment, E Squadron, First The Queen's Dragoon Guards, Dyfed Army Cadet Force (ACF), were presented with the St. John's Ambulance Young First Aider Of The Year Award. The presentation was made at Penally Training Camp by the Lord Lieutenant for Dyfed, The Rt. Hon. Robin Lewis, OBE. The Cadets were nominated for this award because on September 26 last year, they gave emergency aid when a car crashed outside the Territorial Army (TA) Centre in Haverfordwest. Cadet Corporal Rebecca Grayell-Rees (15) and Cadet Megan Grayell-Rees (13) helped the accident victim, while Cadet Nathan Farrer (14) telephoned the emergency services. Rebecca checked for obvious danger and then began to assess the casualty. The casualty was unconscious and could only respond by grunting, so she then performed a 'top to toe' search. She noticed that there was blood on the airbag, which she assumed came from a head wound. After checking that the casualty's airway was clear, and that he was breathing, she climbed into the passenger seat to restrict the victim's head movement. She did this to minimise possible spinal injuries and to make sure the probable head wound could not get any worse. Her sister Megan took control of the gathering crowds. The emergency services arrived shortly after. They all agreed that the Cadets did such an excellent job, all they had to worry about was getting the casualty to hospital and filling in the necessary paperwork. Cadet Corporal Rebecca Grayell-Rees has also been put forward for the Young First Aider Of The Year Medal. This is a national St. John's Ambulance Award that rewards outstanding First Aid action. Of all the skills taught by the Army Cadet Force, First Aid is one of the most valuable. These three Cadets demonstrated that they could put what they learnt into practise in a calm and responsible manner. If anyone would like to join Dyfed Army Cadet Force, please call 01554 756777.
