POPULAR Tenby fireman, Nicky Rees is swapping his brigade uniform for his running gear in readiness for September's first ever Cardiff Marathon.

Thirty-four-year-old Nicky, a plumber by trade, is taking part in the 26-mile run around the capital to raise funds for the Tenby and District Gateway Club.

The event will be taking place on September 1 and Nicky, who has previously taken part in both the London and Dublin marathons, is already busy training and collecting sponsorship.

His colleagues at the South Parade Fire Station kick-started the fund by dipping into their own pockets, raising £100, which was presented to Nicky during the brigade's visit to the Gateway Club on Thursday evening.

Members of the club will be helping collect sponsorship for Nicky themselves and sponsor forms are also available from club chairman, Roland Grigg, at Griggles in Warren Street.
