The resignation for health reasons of the father of Tenby Borough Council, Alderman D. Tudor Hughes, was received with regret by the council.

Tenby Zoo, housed within the walls of the fort on St. Catherine’s Island, was to open for the season.

Four young schoolboys, holidaying at Amroth Castle, with their parents, were involved in a rescue drama when they were involved in a rescue drama when they were cut off by the tide at Telpyn Point. It was the cliff rescue team, aided by a local farmer and his son, who eventually rescued the boys.

Athletes from Tenby’s Greenhill?School had one of their most successful-ever days at the Pembrokeshire Secondary Schools sports at Milford Haven. They swept the board in the senior events, reaching a tremendous climax by taking the boys and girls relays in exciting races. And they were beaten by only a couple of points for the principal trophy - the Lord Merthyr Shield for the maximium points in boys events. There was tremendous disappointment in the Greenhill camp over the latter result, for their entry in one event failed to make the start, which would have qualified for a point. Had he been placed, Tenby would have taken the shield. But there were some magnificent performances by Greenhill athletes. David Blackmore, who only a year ago was leading in the field at Haverfordwest in the distance events, revealed himself as a sprint ace. He romped to a great win in the 100 yards after a poor start and was only beaten into second place in the 220 yards by Haverfordwest’s H. Curran, already a name in Welsh athletics.

Welsh Secondary Schools rugby international Jim Shanklin won the 880 for Tenby and, in taking second place in the triple jump, beat the exisiting county record.

John Butland, a young athlete with an intense capacity for concentration, took the senior boys high jump. After a short rest, he was back in action again to play a full share in the great relay victory with Steve Rowlands, Jim Shanklin and David Blackmore.

Lyndon llewellyn was Tenby’s only star in the middle boys events. He took first place in both the 110 and 200 yards hurdles with very determined running.

In the sub-junior boys section, Greenhill had a star in the making in Anthony Hewitt who had three firsts in the 220 yards, the 70 yards hurdles and the shot.

In Pam Walters, Greenhill had one of the fastest girls in the sports. She too the senior 100 and 200 yards sprints, but Gill Sudbury, Milford, a middle school champion, had faster times and, in fact, broke the national record in the 220.

Carole Williams and Wendy Llewellyn were two others who impressed for Tenby in the senior girls events. They joined with Ann Rowlands and Pam Walters to score a superb relay victory.

Janet Francis created a new national record of 96ft 1in in the middle girls discus and Jane Lawrence won the middle high jump with 4ft 8ins.
