The spectacular display of Christmas lights at Kilgetty's St. Mary's Place has resulted in a magnificent record-breaking sum of over £10,000 being raised for charity.

Visitors who flocked from all over Pembrokeshire and beyond to the village over the festive season to see the winter wonderland illuminations generously donated £10,208.27, topping last year's figure by over £1,000.

The proceeds will be divided equally between the Daniel Burrows Trust Fund, the Special Needs Assessment Playgroup at Withybush Hospital and the South Pembrokeshire Travel Fund for Sick Children.

"People's generosity has been absolutely brilliant and we would like to thank everyone for their donations," said Audrey Thomas, who along with husband Peter again spearheaded the display.

"We just cannot believe it; it has been absolutely amazing, and we even had £89 put in the collecting box on the last night," she continued.

"Father Christmas responded to over 800 letters he received in his post box, while Hagrid, the huge scarecrow we bought from the Llangwm Scarecrow Festival, has become a friend to many of the children in the village, who shout 'good morning' and 'goodnight' to him on their way to and from school.

"Everyone has been so kind and generous right from the grand switch-on, and we would like to thank Father Christmas for attending, Joan Powell, of Powells Cottage Holidays, for donating the sweets Santa gave to all the children, Bartlett Engineering, who brought along a vintage steam engine, and of course K. P. Thomas, who sponsored Santa's letters," said Audrey.

"But, of course, without the help of all those who publicised our efforts, including the wonderful coverage by the Observer, we would not have been able to reach the public like we did. All the publicity we received has been absolutely brilliant, so thank you to you too."
