Expect a feast of comedy talent this September. Span Arts’ Comedy Club presents a BBC New Comedy Awards winner, a Take the Mike finalist and the writer of multi-award winning sketch show, Gein’s Family Giftshop all in one night on Thursday, September 8, at the Queens Hall, Narberth.
Headliner for the evening is Angela Barnes. Angela is a BBC New Comedy Awards winning, English comedian and a self-confessed massive BBC Radio 4 nerd.
Barnes is a regular on the stand-up circuit and has appeared on Weekend Wogan’s Children in Need Special and Russell Kane’s Whistlestop Tour for Radio 2. She has written for Radio 4’s The News Quiz, played on Eddie Izzard’s Laughs in the Park on BBC Two, appeared on Russell Howard’s Good News on BBC Three.
In November 2013, Barnes joined the cast of the topical show Stand Up for the Week and, in February 2014, appeared on Radio 4’s The Now Show. She has also appeared on Mock the Week on BBC Two and Dave’s As Yet Untitled alongside Alan Davies, Janet Street-Porter and Michael Ball.
Barnes is joined by James Sherwood, a stand-up comedian, comedy writer, singer, pianist, and composer. Sherwood was a semi-finalist in ITV’s stand-up talent show Take the Mike in 2002 and runner-up in the BBC New Comedy Awards in 2004.
Sherwood has become one of the country’s foremost comedy writers and continues to rapidly ascend the stand-up circuit. Having received the BBC Radio Entertainment writers’ bursary in 2008, James contributes the funnies to radio shows across the BBC, including The Now Show, The News Quiz and BBC7’s new topical comedy sketch show, Tilt.
MC for the evening is Welsh comedian, Kiri Pritchard McLean. A unique and assured comic voice, Kiri is whip smart with material to match, an apprenticeship on the North West comedy scene equips Kiri with a presence beyond her years and the rare ability to be challenging in her material without alienating her audience.
