Plans for an extra traffic warden to patrol Tenby's streets have been discussed by town councillors.

Their proposal came at a recent meeting when an application by Pembrokeshire County Council to introduce residents parking spaces on the western side of Victoria Street under the spotlight.

With Inspector Les Clark, of the town's police station, also recently revealing that controlling residents parking was a low priority for his officers, councillors believe that the only way to combat the parking violations in the town is to employ an additional permanent traffic warden all-year-round.

"We really need to look at ways of funding to provide an additional traffic warden for the town, as if residents parking is not being policed properly, it won't work," said Deputy Mayor, Clr. Mrs. Christine Brown.

Currently, Tenby has only one permanent all-year-round traffic warden on duty, with additional wardens employed during the summer to patrol the pedestrianisation scheme.

"The major problem is the residents parking; the signs are not clear enough," said Clr. Mrs. Maureen Ward.

"If the county council put markings on the road instead of tiny little signs, there would not be a problem. Ninety per cent of visitors to Tenby just think that they're parking spaces and not residents parking," she added.

Clr. Mickey Folland went on to reveal that his understanding was that any funds for an additional traffic warden would come from the police budget.

"We have to prove to the police department that we have a good case as to why they should put expenditure into paying for an additional traffic warden," he said.

The town council will now be writing to Superintendent Paul Amphlett with their proposal.
