The course offers a musical and contextual survey of Beethoven's life and works. It also explores some of the reason for his unique position in the history of western music.
Beethoven revitalised and revolutionsed accepted musical forms and concepts, including the sonata, string quartet, concerto, symphony and opera. His use of the orchestra, the solo virtuoso performer and the human voice was ground-breaking. The course considers examples of all these genres.
Music to be discussed includes Symphonies 3, 5, 7 and 9, piano sonatas, opera extracts, the Missa Solemnis, string quartets, the Violin Concerto in D and Piano Concertos 1, 4 and 5. The course tutor is Dr. John Harrison.
Past courses held in Tenby have included the Church Music of J. S. Bach, Henry Purcell's vocal music and the life and work of Mozart.
