Stories from Normandy veteran Ted Owens from Pembroke Dock enchanted the Viking Explorer Scouts at a recent meeting.
A former Scout, Ted Owens shared his stories from life as a 15-year-old in Pembroke Dock as war broke out through to his army career.
Ted discussed food rationing, bombing and the struggles for families in Pembrokeshire during the war years. He discussed his early working life and then his army career with 41 Commando and D-Day landing experience.
The personal account of hardship, friendship, injuries, fear and bravery, proved to be a captivating story for the group of Explorer Scouts (aged 14-18), who listened intently.
At the end of the evening, Ted and the Explorer Scouts were presented with a special badge entitled, 'Lest We Forget'. The badge has been produced to promote the Scout campaign to build a Scouting memorial in remembrance of those who have given service to Scouting and for those who have suffered through conflict. This is as relevant today as it has ever been.
The Explorer Scouts appreciated hearing about Ted's experiences. Whilst wearing the 'Lest we Forget' badge this year, the Explorers now have a better understanding of what the badge stands for. They will be reminded of the importance of remembrance with the memory of Ted's moving stories.
The Explorers are looking forward to future visits from Ted to share with them more of his stories and recollections of life during the war years.
