The work of groundbreaking ‘1984’ author George Orwell is to be celebrated at an exhibition opening at Narberth’s Oriel Q gallery this month.

Richad Blair, Orwell’s son, will be opening the show titled ‘Room 103 - a Tribute to George Orwell’ on Friday, March 18, and hopes to be accompanied by Quentin Kopp, Chairman of the Orwell Society.

Although the prophetic novel ‘1984’ was written in the late nineteen forties, Orell’s ideas are horribly relevant today as the present crisis with Russia engulfs Europe.

This small Gallery strikes a blow for freedom from oppressive regimes with its exhibition by creative artists from far and wide, all influenced by his philosophy – a life-long opposition to the exercise of power by governments, seeking to erode truth and control thought.

This exhibition, at a time which is sadly fulfilling Orwell’s predictions, has been seized as an opportunity by the very people such repressive governments hope to crush – the world of ideas and creative art.

These are men and women whose ‘constant vigilance’, in Orwell’s words, hold up a mirror to make us aware of the incursions into the humanity and truths of our daily lives.

The artists present their support for Orwell’s ideas with lively and very varied responses, involving paintings, photography, film and video.

Richad Blair, Orwell’s son, will be opening this show at around 6 pm on Friday, March 18 at 6.30 pm.

The show runs until April 23; with the Gallery open Wednesday to Saturday, from 10 am to 4 pm, at 11 Market Street, SA67 7AX.
