The end of season 2002-2003 cup competitions have now been completed at Heatherton Indoor Bowling Club. A wonderful fortnight of very good bowling took place.

The competitions were all organised by Mr. Mike Goldingay, who without fuss got through all the matches and ended up last Saturday and Sunday with all the finals to be played.

Mike Goldingay would like to thank Mr. B. Barnikel and Mr. D. Silcox for umpiring and all the markers who came forward during the fortnight; also thanks to all the bowlers who took part and played in such a sporting manner.

The finals and results were as follows:

Men's Over 60 Pairs: P. Gray and R. Pring v T. Harris and J. Moffatt. The bowling was of high standard throughout and J. Harris and J. Moffatt won 24-12.

Over 60s Ladies Singles: Mrs. A. Owens v Mrs. B. James. A very close game with the last two ends going in favour of Mrs. A. Owens to win 21-19.

Adam and Eve Singles: A hard match, enjoyable to watch, with Mr. E. Dezelle winning two sets to one against Mrs. Gwenda Rees.

Men's Open Rinks: R. Brabon, H. Davies, D. Burns, C. Davies v P. Gray, R. Pring, E. Dezelle, D. Robb.

A very hard, close game. P. Gray, W. Robb and D. Burns bowled well and R. Brabon, H. Davies, D. Burns and C. Davies won eventually 19-18. When the match was over, Ron Brabon did six somersaults and landed in front of Dave Robb (Narrow Bias) and said "Hard luck, perhaps next year!"

Men's Under 25 Singles: G. Hughes, aged 18 v M. Dick, aged 11. All credit to young Mathew who for his age bowled very well against Gareth who won 21-3.

Men's Open Singles: T. Harris v J. Roberts. Both bowlers showed their drawing skills in a match enjoyed by everyone watching. Well done to J. Roberts who won 21-9 and will now represent Heatherton in the 'Champion of Champions' tournament at a later date in North Wales.

Men's Open Pairs: C. Wynn and S. Reese v M. Jackson and J. Roberts. We all knew this would be a hard and good game. There was some excellent bowling, played in a marvellous spirit, and after the 19th end it was all square. The game was eventually won by C. Wynn and S. Reese 24-22.

Over 60s Singles: N. Ruff v J. Turley. J. Turley bowled well during the previous rounds to get to this final, but lost to N. Ruff who bowled consistently well to win 21-8.

Open Mixed Triples: Mrs. A. Davies, J. Smalley, J. Baggott v Mrs. R. Davies, K. Davies, D. Kenniford.

Mrs. R. Davies, K. Davies and D. Kenniford enjoyed their first final, but lost to a very experienced threesome, 28-7.

Over 60s Ladies Pairs: Mrs. M. Burns and Mrs. A. Owens v Mrs. M. Morris and Mrs. M. Marquiss. A lovely game to watch. In the end it was decided on the last end, with Mrs. Marquiss bowling a superb wood to win the match 18-17.

Ladies Open Singles: Mrs. G. Rees v Mrs. J. Shewry. Both ladies bowled well in a long hard game and Mrs. G. Rees won 21-7 after bowling consistently throughout the match.

Ladies Open Rinks: Mrs. H. Burns, Mrs. W. Lamb, Mrs. G. Rees and Mrs. V. Edwards v Mrs. A. Davies, Mrs. M. Morris, Mrs. B. Lewis, Mrs. M. Marquis. All ladies enjoyed the game and bowled very well. It was a very good game to watch and everyone held their breath as the result really was up to the last bowl. Mrs. M. Burns, Mrs. W. Lamb, Mrs. G. Rees and Mrs. V. Edwards won in the end 21-17.

Ladies Open Pairs: Mrs. M. Lewis, Mrs. B. James v Mrs. J. Howe, Mrs. K. Kennion. An excellent game, with the standard of bowling being very high by all ladies. Mrs. J. Howe and Mrs. K. Kennion came through to win 28-17.

Men's Over 60s Rinks: N. Ruff, R. Kennion, G. Roberts, D. Robb v J. Hammond, S. James, B. Cale, J. Baggot. D. Robb bowled very well and was supported very well by his rink to win a very good match by 26-17.

Ladies Open Triples; Mrs. G. Grutnell, Mrs. A. Davies, Mrs. J. Shewry v M. Morris, B. L. Lewis, M. Marquiss. Mrs. Morris, Mrs. B. L. Lewis, Mrs. M. Marquiss all bowled very well and were always in control of the match to win 35-5.

Over 50s Men's Triples: H. Davies, R. Brabon, J. Dugmore v P. Gray, E. Dezelle, D. Burns. P. Gray and E. Dezelle bowled well, with E. Dezelle bowling good woods to take out shots at crucial times and setting up a 20-15 victory.

Open Mixed Pairs: V. Edwards, J. Smalley v A. Hughes, M. Goldingay. Mrs. A. Hughes and M. Goldingay bowled very well to beat V. Edwards and J. Smalley 17-15. A very close match, with M. Goldingay bowling the winning shot with his last wood.

Open Men's Triples: R. Brabon, M. Jackson, J. Roberts v A. McDonald, D. Merrit, C. Davies. This was another close game. C. Davies bowled well and together with his colleagues went on to win 17-13.

All Heatherton bowlers wish Mrs. Helen Baggot a speedy recovery after she had to pull out of the tournament due to having an operation at Withybush Hospital during the week.

All cup and league presentations were made at a social evening held at Heatherton Indoor Bowling Club. The evening was enjoyed by everyone present.
