Signage issues causing confusion to motorists and pedestrians along The Esplanade area of Tenby are to be looked into.

A concerned resident recently wrote to Tenby Town Council to highlight the traffic issue which they said was causing safety problems for both pedestrians and motorists.

"The main reason for this, is due to poor signage along The Esplanade indicating the correct entry to The Rectory car park. The existing sign is positioned quite a way back from the right-hand bend into Victoria Street leading to the car park. It is obvious that it is not clear enough for visiting motorists," wrote Gail Rees, of Southbeach Court, in a letter that came before Tenby councillors at a recent meeting.

Members received a response on the matter from Pembrokeshire County Council's traffic engineer, Ben Blake, at their meeting on Tuesday night, who said that to address this problem he had drawn up a proposal which looked to introduce new road markings and a sign at the junction.

"The markings look to provide a clearly defined route for traffic which it is hoped will encourage motorists to turn into Victoria Street rather than the cul-de-sac at the end of The Esplanade," wrote Mr. Blake.

"The markings are to be supplemented with the sign which also advises that parking in that area is for permit and disabled only," he added.

Clr. Will Rossiter felt there was a "whole lot of signage" already in that area and asked if it couldn't be simplified.

The Mayor, Clr. Mrs. Sue Lane, said that a meeting had already been called by Clr. Mike Evans to look into a review of signage and parking issues in that area and around the town.

"I recommend that we accept this for the time being and reply to the county council that we're looking forward to a further review of the Esplanade area and the town," she said.
