Longstanding Narberth councillor, Eric Feetham, has come to the rescue of the town's Mayoral dilemma.

Five times former Mayor of the town, Clr. Eric Feetham is to stand as the town's First Citizen for a record sixth occasion after the shock resignation of county councillor Wynne Evans last week.

At an emergency council meeting last Thursday, Deputy Mayor, Clr. Mrs. Elizabeth Rogers, said that having given the matter considerable thought, she regretted she would not be able to take on the responsibility of Mayor.

She felt she would be unable to perform the duty adequately, without the experience this year as deputy would give her.

It was therefore felt that the expertise of a former Mayor would be needed to bridge the gap. Clr. Eric Feetham offered to stand which was duly accepted by members.

Clr. Feetham, who was awarded the MBE last year for services to the community of Narberth, said that he never expected to wear the mantle again, but he felt that under the circumstances, it was his duty to ensure that Narberth did not suffer.

Born and brought up in Llawhaden, Clr. Feetham, a retired businessman, first joined the Urban District Council in 1968, before taking his seat on Narberth Town Council when it was formed in 1972.

Married to Doris for over 50 years, he also represented Narberth on South Pembrokeshire District Council for 13 years and was honoured to be chairman in 1984/85.

CIVIC Service to go ahead

Narberth town councillors were shocked to find that all arrangements for the forthcoming civic service had been cancelled by Clr. Evans, including the invitations which had been sent out to guests and civic dignitaries.

They were surprised to learn this, as the civic luncheon which follows the service is an annual celebration of the town of Narberth and takes place every year, regardless of who is the Mayor.

The civic service and the luncheon will take place as planned on Sunday, July 23, gathering at the Queen's Hall at 11 am ready for the parade to St. Andrew's Church for the service at 11.30 am, and afterwards at the Plas Hyfryd Hotel for the luncheon.
