West Wales Rivers Trust has issued an invasive species alert for American skunk cabbage.

The plant, which has been introduced to ornamental gardens in Wales and is found in boggy areas and near water sources, has large waxy green leaves, a pungent sickly smell and bright yellow flowers with tall seed stems.

People coming across American skunk cabbage are urged not to pick or cut any part of the plant; not to attempt to destroy the plant or move it from where they found it.

Instead, they are encouraged to take photographs and record their location, then inform their local biological records centre, which for Pembrokeshire, Ceredigion, and Carmarthenshire is West Wales Biodiversity Information Centre. Visit wwbic.org.uk.
