On Friday, March 18, for the final meeting this season, Tenby Arts Club enjoyed a concert by the Quaynotes Choir. Along with their musical director, Mark Thompson, and accompanist Eileen Thomas, the choir provided an excellent programme.

Carol announced the first set as consisting of popular music. First ‘You raise me up’, initially by Secret Garden but popularised by Westlife. Then Leonard Cohen’s ‘Hallelujah’, the version from Shrek, followed by the Burt Bacharach and Hal David number, ‘Close to You’, forever associated with the Carpenters. Finally, a song written for Whitney Houston for the 1998 Seoul Olympics, ‘One Moment in Time’.

While the choir had a rest, Mirella Evans played Saint Saens ‘Fantasy in E flat major’ on the trumpet. The second set was spiritual and sacred. First, Mozart’s ‘Ave Verum’, followed by ‘God so loved the World’. The theme tune of the Vicar of Dibley followed – ‘The Lord Is my Shepherd’ by Howard Goodall. Finally, an anthem by John Rutter, ‘Look at the World’.

The second soloist, sister to the first, was Nell on the oboe. She played the Sonata for Oboe and Cello by Marcello. The final set by the choir was inspired by recent events in the news, with the first being a song from the 1986 film, ‘An American Tale’, about two mice who are actually Ukrainian refugees, ‘Somewhere out there’. This was followed by the classic from Disney’s Lion King, ‘Can you Feel the Love Tonight?’ Next came ‘Bring Him Home’ from Les Miserables and finally ‘Anthem’ from the musical, Chess, dedicated to the people of Ukraine at this difficult time.

As everyone moved out to the hall to enjoy tea, coffee and refreshments, it was noticed that the choir were all wearing little yellow and blue hearts. After plenty of conversation and replenishment, everyone started to head for home, after an superb evening’s entertainment.

The next meeting of Tenby Arts Club will be the AGM to which all members are invited. This will be on Friday, April 22 at 6 pm in St Johns Church Hall. There will be refreshments and even a mini-speaker (the speech is mini rather than the speaker!).

Then on Friday, July 15, everyone is welcome to the preview evening of the Arts Club Art Exhibition, when again, there will be refreshments, and a raffle.

The next season of regular meetings will start on Friday, October 7 at 6 pm, with details of the programme to follow later in the year
