A new £10,000 bursary has been launched to support the creation and touring of original Welsh-language outdoor performance work, as part of an ambitious collaboration between some of Wales’ most influential cultural organisations.

Theatr Stryd Cymru is a new commissioning opportunity for Wales-based Welsh speakers and Welsh learners to create an original piece of street theatre or outdoor performance, touring to four major events across Wales in 2026.

The initiative is a collaboration between Menter Iaith Bro Morgannwg/Gŵyl Fach y Fro, Menter Iaith Caerdydd/Tafwyl, National Eisteddfod, and Green Man Trust/Green Man Festival, with support from the Arts Council of Wales.

The bursary builds on the success of the recent commission Mari Haf!, created by Osian Meilir, which demonstrated both the artistic potential and strong audience appetite for high-quality Welsh-language outdoor work.

That project highlighted the impact that targeted commissioning can have in developing artists, expanding audiences, and embedding the Welsh language within vibrant festival environments.

All four festival partners are united in their commitment to growing Welsh-language outdoor arts and street theatre, and to developing more artists who create and perform outdoor work in Welsh.

The National Eisteddfod and Green Man Festival both host popular and well-established street theatre programmes and are now working closely with Tafwyl to further develop their outdoor performance offer and share expertise across festivals.

This collaboration represents a significant step forward in cross-festival working, bringing together organisations with shared values but distinct audiences and contexts.

By pooling resources and platforms, Theatr Stryd Cymru offers artists a rare opportunity to create work that can be seen by diverse audiences across Wales — from community-led Welsh-language festivals to internationally renowned cultural events.

The bursary of £10,000 will cover creation costs and performance fees, with the selected project touring to Gŵyl Fach y Fro in Barry, Tafwyl in Cardiff, the National Eisteddfod in north Pembrokeshire, and Green Man Festival in Powys during 2026.

Applications are welcomed from artists with a wide range of practices, including circus, physical comedy, puppetry, dance and walkabout performance, and from those new to outdoor arts as well as experienced practitioners.

Applications close at 5pm on Sunday, March 1.
