Pembroke & Monkton Local History Society begins its new season of events with a Quiz Night on Friday, September 25 in Pembroke Town Hall at 7pm.

Tickets are £5 payable at the door and this includes a buffet. Teas and coffee are provided, but you may bring your own wine if you wish.

Following this, on Saturday morning October 3, a Coffee Morning and Talk will be held in Pembroke Town Hall. It has become something of a tradition that Gareth Mills, always an effective and popular speaker, begins the programme of talks. His subject this time is ‘The Meyrick Family and the Bush Estate’.

The Meyricks of Bush were an influential and dynamic family, a family that played a hugely important part in the history of Pembroke and Monkton as well as a vital role in the creation of Pembroke Dock.

Their main residence was Bush House, where the family lived until the 1950s when the house and its surrounding estate were sold to Pembrokeshire County Council. A new grammar school was built there, becoming a comprehensive school in 1972 but more recently demolished and rebuilt as the Ysgol Harri Tudur - Henry Tudor School.

Bush House survives however as a residential home for the elderly.Doors open at 10am for the Coffee Morning followed by the Talk at 11am.

Open also for the event will be Pembroke Museum and Council Chamber, which are situated on the first floor of the Town Hall. A lift is available for disabled access.

All are welcome to attend and entry is free. Proceeds from the Coffee Morning and raffle cover our overheads.
