NARBERTH Jazz hosted an evening of unwavering creativity by Welsh jazz group Brass Band Bychan recently at the Plas Hotel.
The set brimmed with innovative basslines and infectious energy. It was a dismal and foggy evening, but the music at the Plas on Thursday, January 16 shone through and lifted spirits .
The audience was given a fresh take on jazz which invited listeners into a world of playful rhythms from Mark O’Connor and uplifting melodies, driven by the incredible Sousaphone playing of Alastair Stewart.
The evening’s collection opener was Go Stop-Go-Man with ‘four basslines’, setting a lively foundation for the groups journey. Something Happy followed, living up to its name with buoyant harmonies that inspire smiles.
The performance featured the whimsical Coop de Toot, the evocative Wrth Fynd Efo Deio i Dywyn, and a heartfelt rendition of Duke Ellington's classic Creole Love Call, where the blending of trumpet and trombone were unsurpassable. Gethin Liddington (trumpet) and Gareth Roberts (trombone) made for a unique musical duo, the latter having composed all but one of the works.
The set culminated with the delightful Siw Piw and the spirited Celebration of Stubbornness, each piece showcasing the artist's and group’s unique approach to composition.
