However, the week didn't start great when the Ladies' final was postponed due to Emma from SSSC having to pull out because of a broken ankle and Ann Marie wasn't so good herself with a bad leg (hope you both improve soon). Also, the Landlords wasn't played, due to the fact that Jason, of the Hean, had a no show. Meanwhile, the Wednesday prior to the night, the Over 40s final was played between Dave Wooles (Dragon) and Richard Lewis (Kilgetty RAOB A), with a close match ending in a 3-2 win for Richard.
Anyway on to the night's events. First up saw the Doubles between brothers Ian and Marc Hughes (Dingle) against Shaw Povey and Alan Luke (Globe B). At 1-1, it looked like the Globe boys could pull something off, but it was not to be as the experience of the Dingle boys saw them take the match 4-1. In the Under 21s, two promising players, Aron Keane (RAOB A) and Marc Thomas (Kilgetty RAOB A), were in action, and taking nothing away from Marc, who played extremely well, he will agree that Aron didn't have the run of the balls. Marc ended up with a fine 3-1 win. The Triples saw the team of Dave Wooles, John Goble and Paul Rowlands (Dragon) taking on the highly-rated Kilgetty RAOB A side of Neil Thomas, Jon Caine and Richard Lewis. The Dragon will admit they couldn't get into this game at all, losing out well in the end 5-1.
The Captains saw Ian Hughes, fresh from his game in the Doubles, take on Tony Thomas (Kilgetty RAOB A). Tony, to his credit, didn't suffer any nerves, out-potting Ian throughout the match to deservedly win 3-1. Next up was the long-awaited final of the Team Knockout, pairing the Dingle against rivals the Temple Bar. League form between the two teams saw 5-4 wins for the Temple Bar.
The Dingle started off unlucky when Matthew (Titch) Davies went in off the black against Phil Lewis. However, back to back wins for the Dingle's Ben James and Jeff Thomas over Lee Thomas and Meirion Rees saw a slender lead. This must have woke the Temple Bar up, as Tom Lewis and Johnny Wilson won the next two over Marc Hughes and Simon Beynon. The singles ended level after Ian Hughes beat Dai Lawrence.
With the clock ticking away, both teams shared the first two doubles. And after a nail-biter, it was the Temple Bar pairing of Meirion and Lee who beat Ben and Jeff to gain revenge for the singles. Finally, the Singles saw regular finalist, Richard Lewis, up against first-timer in the singles final, Will Vallance (RAOB A), and with Richard leading 2 -1 at one point he looked in control. Will, however, is one of the top county boys and no pushover, taking control of the game and winning the next three frames to take the match 4-2.
Many thanks to the staff of the RFC, all the referees on the night and to all the players who made it a good evening's entertainment.
