During the half-term holidays, Tenby Junior captain, 12-year-old Georgia Thomas, pitted herself against some 60 or so junior girls who had entered the Knowle Golf Club Junior Girls Open. One of only six all-girls junior opens in the country, the tournament saw competitors enter from the West Country, the Midlands, as well as from London. Played as a medal round in a strong gusting wind, Georgia scored a gross 85, nett 68, despite never seeing the course, and as the leaderboard was on display in the clubhouse, had an anxious wait to see if her score would be good enough. One of the last girls in was Myriam Hassan, whose sister is the Tenby ladies course record holder Sara. With the girls being friends, it transpired that she also had the same score. However, as the Shannon Cup is presented to the winner after a stableford points conversion, Georgia was delighted to win the cup with a back nine of 22 points. The win, which was a first by a girl from Wales, saw a delighted Georgia drop her handicap down to 15, while she spends the next weekend away with the Under 18 Welsh Development Squad at the Celtic Manor Resort. Georgia is pictured receiving the Shannon Cup from Knowle lady captain, Mrs. Carol Millhouse.
