Cauldrons & Furnaces, a series of high profile events being delivered by the Welsh Government to welcome another strand of the Cultural Olympiad, is coming to Laugharne. The heart of the celebrations lie in Laugharne Castle, which will play its part in an adventure trail laden with clues and riddles in Talacharn Trails & Tales until Sunday, July 15.
The celebrations began in June with an opening ceremony for the magical story trail and last week the Cauldrons & Furnaces pilgrims, who were walking from east to west Wales in 22 days as part of the celebrations, stopped in Laugharne and were met by over 170 local schoolchildren.
Tomorrow (Saturday) at Laugharne Castle, a promenade performance of Blodeuwedd will take place from 2 - 4 pm involving story-telling and dance performances by local schoolchildren.
Talacharn Trails & Tales is one of eight Cauldrons & Furnaces events, telling extraordinary stories in extraordinary places at iconic Cadw sites. Thousands of young people will be sharing their nation's colourful history from its mythical beginnings to modern times with visitors from all over the world. On route they will discover the diversity, skills and talents of the 17,000 young people and artists taking part.
Cauldrons & Furnaces is a partnership between Cadw, the Welsh Government's historic environment service, and the Arts Council of Wales. The project is part of Power of the Flame, and has been funded by Legacy Trust UK, an independent charity which is creating a lasting impact from the London 2012 Olympic and Paralympic Games by funding local talent to inspire creativity across the UK.
Clare Williams, the creative events programmer of Cauldrons & Furnaces, said: "This month-long story trail has delighted and enthralled its visitors. The castle has been full of surprises - some dramatic and eye-catching, others charming and whimsical. The whole family will love exploring the castle to look for hidden stories in the stones. A huge amount of work has gone into these Cauldrons & Furnaces performances and it will be a fantastic opportunity for people to not only come and see their local Cadw heritage site brought to life, but also some brilliant up-and-coming local young talent."
Deryn May (12) from Dyffryn Taf School, who will be taking part in the performance of Blodeuwedd, said: "We are all so excited about the production of Blodeuwedd in Laugharne. It's an amazing feeling to be part of something as big as the Cultural Olympiad. This is really a unique experience that I will remember for the rest of my life.
"Being part of this production has boosted my confidence and I love the fact that I am learning about Welsh legends and culture at the same time," he added. "It has been a fantastic opportunity to work with professional artists and learn new skills."
