Leading British athletes have joined forces with EDF Energy, the first sustainability partner of the London 2012 Olympic and Paralympic Games, to visit some of Great Britain's most sustainable schools.
Identified for its truly inspirational eco-initiatives, Tavernspite CP School received a visit yesterday (Thursday) from double Paralympic gold medallist Eleanor Simmonds to demonstrate some of the impressive changes the school has put in place to become greener.
The school aims to encourage children as young as three years to understand how the community works together to look after the environment and has a diverse garden and pond area.
The pupils also heard first-hand from Eleanor about the inaugural EDF Energy Green Britain Day, taking place on July 10.
An annual event, Green Britain Day aims to inspire the nation to work together to lower Great Britain's carbon footprint by the time the Olympic and Paralympic Games arrive in London in 2012 and leave a lasting legacy.
Working with the London Organising Committee of the Olympic Games and Paralympic Games (LOCOG), The Eden Project and schools around Britain, EDF Energy is enabling communities to 'do something green for the team' on Green Britain Day, creating a wave of tangible action across Britain.
People are invited to join Team Green Britain (teamgreenbritain.org), a community aimed at harnessing the power of collective action that will suggest new sustainability actions to take on Green Britain Day.
Between now and July 10, Tavernspite CP teachers and pupils will be collecting 'Green Feet' pledges. These pledges will highlight how they plan to take action against climate change. Schools can access this initiative at the online hub of EDF Energy's Programme for Greener Schools, 'The Pod'. And on Green Britain Day, the school will open its doors to the community, inspiring their families, friends and neighbours to 'do something green for the team' by making their own green pledge and joining Team Green Britain.
Julie Houghton, headteacher at Tavernspite CP School, said: "It's so important for schools to drive the sustainability agenda as we are educating the next generation of environmental guardians.
"We're proud to be recognised by EDF Energy with a visit from an Olympic athlete as testament to the hard work we've put in to set an example to others. We can't wait for Green Britain Day to spread our ideas and enthusiasm beyond the school gates."
