The Whitland primary school was founded in 1875. The school, which is named after the Welsh king and law-maker, Hywel Dda, has around 150 pupils in the historic building together with its modern hall and classrooms.

The event began with guided tours of the school, offering guests the opportunity to admire many of the original architectural features and to see how the building has developed and adapted over the decades. Special thanks were extended to Mrs Valarie Davies for her invaluable assistance in leading these tours.

It was a pleasure to welcome so many familiar and unfamiliar faces to the celebration. Guests enjoyed tea and cake while sharing photographs, memories, and stories, and many took the opportunity to reconnect with former classmates, teachers, and even previous headteachers.

Liz’s Bakery, Narberth kindly donated a beautifully crafted cake to commemorate the occasion.

The evening concluded with performances from members of the Ysgol Llys Hywel School Choir and the Whitland Male Voice Choir, whose renditions of traditional favourites provided a fitting end to a remarkable celebration.

It all made for memorable evening, celebrating the 150th anniversary of the school building and marking a significant milestone in the history of education within the local community in Whitland.

Earlier in the year, both pupils and staff of Ysgol Llys Hywel dressed up in Victorian clothing. Pupils explored what life was like all those years ago and deepened their understanding of history through engaging activities. The day included a special picnic lunch, adding to the celebratory atmosphere.

These events have been a resounding success, reflecting both the pride of the community and the enduring legacy of Ysgol Llys Hywel over the past 150 years.
