Eleven French Horn students (aged 15 – 20) from all over the UK arrived at Cilpost Farmhouse, Whitland last week for a summer school run between July 9 and 13.
Course Director was the professional horn player Peter Widgery who is ably supported by his colleague Simon de Souza.
Peter’s brother, Nigel, owns Cilpost Farmhouse and runs it as a large self-catering holiday let, so there is plenty of space for the students to play and relax.
It is believed to be the only residential course entirely devoted to horn playing.
Students enjoyed the opportunity to play a wide range of music from Wagner and Mahler to ‘Titanic’ and ‘633 Squadron’.
For many of them it was the first chance they have had to play in a horn ensemble.
The standard was very high and it was a delight to hear them – some are already at Music College, with a professional career beckoning.
The course culminated on Friday evening with a garden party and informal performance for friends and families.
On giving feedback, students said they enjoyed the “relaxed, friendly atmosphere and the variety of music” which they played.
“The opportunity to play some amazing music in a beautiful place with some wonderful people,” said one student.
The organisers plan to run a similar course at the same time next year and look forward to working with more talented young people.
