Primary school pupils across Carmarthenshire were recently given an opportunity to showcase their business skills and become a market trader for the day in three Junior Traders Competition events.

The events were held in Carmarthen, Llanelli, and Ammanford from 21 to 23 May.

Participating schools received funding of £150 to buy materials or products to sell at their stall on the market whilst local judges scored teams on stall presentation and profits made on the day.

Across the three events, those who took part recorded sales of more than £6,000. The opportunity gave the school pupils a chance to develop their learning in key business skills like product and brand development, budgeting, marketing, selling and presenting to customers.

In Llanelli, Ysgol Dewi Sant won the best presented stall and Ysgol Penygaer achieved the highest overall profit from sales.

At the Carmarthen event, Llangunnor School both won best-presented stall and highest overall profit from sales.

In Ammanford, Ysgol Rhydaman won best presented stall and Ysgol y Bedol made the highest overall profit from sales.

Cabinet Member for Rural Affairs, Community Cohesion and Planning Policy, Cllr Carys Jones said: “This competition is a brilliant example of how we can bring learning to life. Our young people have demonstrated creativity, confidence, and collaboration, skills that will serve them well into the future. I’d like to thank all the schools, sponsors, organisers, and families who supported the event. The enthusiasm and entrepreneurial spirit on display was truly inspiring.”

These events were organised by Carmarthenshire County Council with support from Llanelli Town Council and Llanelli Community Partnership, with thanks to the following sponsors:

Carmarthen & Llanelli Chamber of Trade; Ammanford & Llanelli Town Council; Llanelli Community Partnership; Ymlaen Llanelli; Foothold Cymru.
