Year-on-year Pembrokeshire College is seeing sports stars raising their game, with increasing numbers representing Wales and the UK.

Naturally, rugby and football are still firm favourites, but what makes the Sports Academy so effective is how the staff give equal support to all sporting disciplines.

Students who have represented Wales/Welsh Colleges this year include: Kylie Archer (rugby), Katie Thicker (rugby), Ffion Howells (rugby), Nick Walters (rugby), Alfie Stottor (football), Spencer Williams (football), Toby Poole (cricket), Jack Parkinson (cricket), Abigail Buxton (athletics), William Bateman (badminton), Nyle Lewis (swimming), Ellie Parks (swimming) and Lewis Phillips (Ttennis).

“Pembrokeshire College has a great reputation for sport, especially on the national Welsh Colleges circuit. We’ve seen an increase in the calibre of our students over the years - natural talent, coupled with support and coaching, regardless of their sport, produces tremendous talent!” said Kevin Hopkins, sports lecturer.

The sports teaching and coaching team at Pembrokeshire College were recently ‘highly commended’ for the National Pearson Further Education Teaching Award 2016, the largest qualifications awarding body in the UK.

Principal, Sharron Lusher, celebrated the achievements of both sports students and staff commenting on how the academies are going from strength-to-strength, and said “I am so proud of how our students positively portray the values of Pembrokeshire College inside and out.”
