Pembrokeshire College Level 3 Childcare students have planned and delivered a sensory session to Bright Start Day Nursery children during an Estyn inspection this week.

As part of the Childcare course, students spend a day a week delivering an activity to the children from the Bright Start Day Nursery. Themed on the popular picture book, ‘We’re Going on a Bear Hunt’ by Michael Rosen, the second year Childcare students planned and prepared a sensory time-line, numeracy activities and a sensory tunnel which led the children into the famous narrow gloomy cave where a cosy story time took place.

The college’s Level 2 Childcare students painted the windows with colourful images from the picture book, highlighting key words.

Pembrokeshire College senior lecturer for Childcare, Tracey Saunders, explained: “It’s great for our students to have work experience built into their course. By this stage they are used to planning and delivering their own sessions and this type of experience is invaluable. It was great for them to be involved in the Estyn inspection for the Foundation Phase.”

The Bright Start Nursery is linked to Pembrokeshire College, and offers a lively, safe and caring environment for children aged between nought and seven years. The professional team of staff create a happy, educational and stimulating atmosphere in which children explore and learn through play activities that develop them physically, intellectually, emotionally, socially and through language.

Bright Start Day Nursery manager, Rachael Rendell, said the children enjoyed the activity.

“The Level 3 Childcare students delivered a fantastic range of activities based on our theme. The nursery children are used to the students coming in on a weekly basis if not more. It’s great that we have a strong partnership to be able to help the students gain valuable experience and share good practice.”
