Trefloyne golfer James Maxwell made a dream start to his professional career by winning his home club's pro-am three weeks after signing on with club pro Oliver Duckett.

Not only did he decimate the strong field on his pro debut, he set a new pro course record of five-under-par 67 to match the one he posted as a plus-two handicap amateur.

"That day it was sunny with no wind and I was not under pressure," said the 6ft 2in 19-year-old local lad. "This time it was a real test as the wind was blowing hard to make everything much more difficult.

"These were the hardest conditions I have experienced here in five years. I hit four-irons into par threes where I normally hit a wedge."

He was four clear of West Region order of merit winner and PGA Cup player Richard Dinsdale (Parc Golf Academy), while the other seasoned pros, among them former European Tour player Stuart Little, found it hard to believe that such a low round was possible on a demanding day.

Maxwell birdied the fourth and eighth holes to be out in two-under-par. He made further birdies at 12, 14 and 15 and another at 18 when he floated a lob wedge to within a foot.

"It might have been so much better as I missed four putts from inside six feet and dropped one on 17," said Maxwell, who started playing at Tenby, before switching to Trefloyne seven years ago.

The former Wales under-14 and under-16 player and Dyfed junior captain who won his club championship last year is now looking to play in more pro-ams.

Duckett, who organised the club's first-ever pro-am, which was sponsored by Corrs Brewery, said: "It was a great success and it was exciting for everyone to see James win so handsomely."

Dinsdale, who was the only other player under par, brought home the winning Bar 10 team in seven-under-par 137. Club captain Mel Neale was in the team that finished third.
