Last weekend saw Tenby Swimming Club firstly travel to Ammanford for the second round of the Dyfed Senior League. Surely this confrontation would bring an end to The Dolphins' dominance of the three counties swimming in recent times, with Ammanford having home advantage, Llanelli's huge catchment area as well as one of the top facilities in West Wales, Aberaeron, a team made up of three pools, Cardigan, Newcastle Emlyn and Aberaeron, and Pembroke - all, who let's face it, have the advantage of a pool to train in.
Tenby knew this was to be a hard meet, but after winning the first round, putting them top of the league, a top three place would give them a good chance of getting into the final where the top six teams battle it out for the title of Dyfed Senior League Champions.
Last year Tenby had managed to win the Dyfed Junior League in frantic style, but in the Dyfed Senior League had only managed runners-up to Llanelli. But how can a team with no pool beat a team with outstanding facilities as well as the other teams present.
The answer is simple: guts, determination, support and team spirit. With nine new personal best times, some smashing their old times, the result was familiar, Pembroke 134, Llanelli 173, Ammanford 195, Aberaeron 198 and Tenby 202.
The Dolphins now go to the final in Llanelli in a few weeks time, ranked top, to do battle for the league title, once again against the odds.
All the committee has to do is work out how to pay for the coach to Ammanford last week, and to the final - offers please, as coffers are at an all-time low.
As if The Dolphins had not asked enough of its swimmers, the Pembrokeshire Team Championships took place on Sunday at Pembroke pool.
This competition is for 11s, 13s and 15s and open (adult) swimmers, similar to the previous day, with only the nine-year-olds being omitted.
The competition featured the usual Pembrokeshire teams of Pembroke, Haverfordwest, Milford Haven and of course Tenby.
Last year, Tenby won the Girls Trophy, a relay trophy called the Cannon Cup and the overall Pembrokeshire Teams Championship Cup, but a repeat was asking a lot in recent circumstances.
From the start, Tenby boys showed their strength and confidence, storming home for win after win, once again smashing previous times and leaving team training coaches questioning how such results could be achieved with no pool.
The girls' results were just as good, but they found themselves with a distinct lack of 14 and 15-year-olds due to holidays and 'broken limbs', which meant much younger girls filling the gaps. This, coupled with an attack from a superb Milford Haven girls squad, allowed Milford to steal the Girls Trophy.
The overall result was to be Milford Haven girls won the Girls Trophy, Tenby Dolphins the Boys Trophy and overall Tenby took the Pembrokeshire Team Championship Cup for a second consecutive year.
A total of 14 new personal best times were recorded.
The club cannot wait to get back into its own pool at Tenby, which could be open in two to three weeks with luck, so it can encourage all its members, young and older, to rejoin its ranks, learning to swim as well continuing to build on its great swimming team for the future.
In the meantime, swimming will continue on Friday 7-8 pm at Narberth for our younger swimmers and Saturday 8.15 - 9.45 am at Pembroke for squad swimmers, until 'our pool re-opens'.
