TWO exhibitions are running concurrently at Art Matters in Tenby as part of the Tenby Arts Festival from tomorrow (Saturday).

The first is a retrospective exhibition of the work of Max Fairbrother, of Lamphey, who sadly lost his battle with cancer in June this year.

Max started his career in publishing as a designer, and during the '70s he worked on the fashion bible Vogue and designed a number of books for the Rolling Stones. Subsequently he spent 10 years developing a composite photographic technique that became the hallmark of his work.

He said that the decision to work in this way came about for three reasons: Firstly, that he wanted to explore the representation of landscape in a way that broke away from dependence on a fixed and single viewpoint.

Secondly, that he wanted to use a working approach that would be open to anyone with a reasonable camera and required no special techniques or expensive equipment. Thirdly, that he wanted to create images that would be completely accessible and recognisable to anyone.

"If my work is about anything," said Max, "it is about a personal attempt to explore the nature and quality of space in ways anyone can identify with.

"Above all, my images are about my beloved Sir Benfro, the most perfectly beautiful place I know."

The images are both visually exciting and thought-provoking. This is an exhibition not to be missed.

The second is an exhibition of the selected works submitted for the first Tenby Arts Festival Open Art Competition.

More than 100 paintings were entered using a wide range of media and it was very difficult for judges Naomi Tydeman, Arthur Lewis, Marion Hutton and John Thomas, the town crier, to choose around 40 for the final exhibition and to select the prize-winners.

The result is an exhibition of work of exceptional quality, all of which is for sale.

The organisers would like to thank all those who supported this event by entering the competition, the judges for giving their time and expertise, and to the following sponsors for generously donating prizes: Clarice Art Materials, of Tenby, Emrys Art Supplies, of Carmarthen and Haverfordwest, Ken Bromley Art Supplies, of Bolton and Derwent, the Lakeland Pencil Company.

Both exhibitions continue until Thursday, October 11, Monday to Saturday, 10 am to 6 pm, at Art Matters, South Parade, Tenby. For further details telephone (01834) 843375.
