It's that time of year again for the Pembrokeshire Junior Team championships, sponsored by the RAOB Lodges of Pembrokeshire for the 23rd year. Tenby have won for the last two years, but having lost six months in the pool this year for renovations, how can their juniors fare against the competition.
The team was selected from children attending length sessions on a Monday and Thursday evening. Choosing the right team was a very difficult decision as there are so many talented and enthusiastic children attending these sessions. The final team list was as follows:
Girls: Lauren Arthur, Rachel Hensman, Dani Gristey, Holly Jones, Eleanor Brown, Eleanor Brewer, Rebecca Bockhart, Lucy Birt, Gemma Amos, Kasha Lanham, Tasha Kinsey, Heather Whittaker, Sophie Arthur, Sophie Greer, Emily Pellington, Sarah Birt.
Boys: Elliot Scotcher, Maxwell Randles, James Oakley, Sam Baxter, Henry Whittaker, Alex Heesom, Dean Pellington, Oliver Pellington; Danny Brown, Callum Worrall, Ben Tickle, Adam Hensman, Richard Cope, Lewys Canton, Leon Goddard, Daniel Brown, Andrew James.
The whole team entered into the spirit of the competition, even though for many it was their first gala. It soon became evident that even with their pool closed for six months the children from Tenby had caught up with their rivals and their standard of swimming was breathtaking. No swimmer from Tenby did a false start or incorrect stroke which could have cost the team points, even during the exciting relay events at the end.
The final results were as follows: Girls: 1. Tenby 69 pts; 2. Pembroke 63 pts; 3. Haverfordwest 60 pts; 4. Milford Haven 56 pts; 5. Preseli 5 pts.
Boys: 1. Tenby 81 pts; 2. Haverfordwest 66 pts; 3. Pembroke 64 pts; 4.Milford Haven 41 pts; 5. Preseli 6 pts.
Cannon relay: 1. Tenby; 2. Haverfordwest; 3. Milford Haven.
Overall: 1. Tenby 150 pts; 2. Pembroke 127 pts; 3. Haverfordwest 126 pts; 4. Milford Haven 97 pts; 5. Preseli 11 pts.
A big thank you to all the children who took part, and good luck to all taking part in the Pembrokeshire Age Group Championships at the end of the month. To all those who have not made the team yet, keep trying, you're doing great. And finally, a big thank you to all you mums and dads who make it all possible for your children.
Unfortunately, due to Dyfed and Pembrokeshire Championships there will be no swimming lessons on the following Sundays, October 21 and 28, as well as November 4. All other sessions will continue, including over the half-term break.
On the day before the RAOB Junior Gala, some of Tenby's keener swimmers ventured to Llanelli for an open sprint meet to compete with swimmers from all over England and Wales. All the events are over 50 metres and the Tenby competitors once again showed they are up there with the best.
The following took part: Debra Davies, Michael Nicholas, Sophie Stanford; Saskia Petersen, Joannn Randles, Jamie Nicholas, Carl Amos, Leon Goddard, Gemma Amos, Kasha Lanham.
Every single swimmer who took part from Tenby did new personal times, with Debra, Michael, Sophie, Saskia, Joann and Jamie attaining medals which allowed them to take part in the invitation Individual Medley event, open only to the top six in each age. Once again the Tenby swimmers were to return with a serious haul of medals and trophies.
All in all, this has been an exceptional year for the Dolphins as a whole, with a fine cabinet of cups to prove it.
As well as producing multi Welsh medalist in Sophie Stanford and West Wales Individual Medley Champion, multi Welsh medalist and National Championship qualifier in Michael Nicholas, not forgetting Welsh Masters Champions in Norman Goddard, Austyn Shortman and Martyn James, the club are presently Pembrokeshire Junior Champions, Pembrokeshire Senior Champions, Pembrokeshire Junior Team Champions, Pembroke Tudor Shield Champions, Dyfed Junior Team Champions and Dyfed Senior Team Champions. Not bad for a team without a pool for half of the year!
Good luck to you all in the Dyfed Fastwater (relay) Competition this coming Sunday.
Tenby Dolphins have become affiliated to the Saundersfoot Sports and Social Club in the last few years for mutual benefit, with the Sports Club boosting its patronage and the Dolphins a base for meetings, the use of the minibus for county training, as well as somewhere to celebrate its victories.
Therefore, it was with great delight and gratitude that Tenby Dolphins recently received a new speedo pace clock from the Sports Club, paid for out of a successful season of fund-raising, presentation of which was made to the Dolphins by the Sports Club steward and committee member Roger Stanford.
Receiving the clock on behalf of the Dolphins on poolside at their recent Fun Night was Norman Goddard, swimming club secretary, along with a group of its regular swimmers. Hopefully it will soon be erected on the poolside wall by Tenby Leisure Centre maintenance people.
Finally, a big thank you to new manager Robert Thomas and his staff at the Leisure Centre for their continuous support and massive thumbs up for a fantastic Fun Night on Monday.
