A DUO from Tenby are set to go one step further than wearing crazy costumes at the London Marathon this April.
Hotelier Richard Slate, 48, and his son Morgan, 22, will be running whilst carrying cardboard ‘clones’ of themselves.
Teaching assistant Morgan, who was born in the same year that Dolly the Sheep started her life in a test tube, said: “It’s hard to find time to get the running shoes on. People often say they need to be cloned to fit everything in, and we have done just that.
“We reckoned that if Dolly the Sheep could be cloned, then so could we!”
It will be Richard’s seventh time completing the 26.2 mile race, and this time he has more plans in the run-up to the event:
“The day before the marathon, our cut-outs will be seen sightseeing with us around London and, of course, on race day they will be accompanying us to the finish line,” he said.
The pair will be running to raise £4,000 for JDRF, which funds type 1 diabetes research to improve lives and one day eradicate the condition for good.
Type 1 diabetes is an autoimmune condition that affects about 400,000 people in the UK, 29,000 of them children.
People with type 1 diabetes rely on multiple insulin injections or pump infusions every day just to stay alive.
But running next month is not Richard’s first charity effort: “I ran my first marathon after working with a young person with type 1 diabetes, and after seeing the daily struggles, I really wanted to do something to help.
“Since then, there is even more determination to help find a cure for all those families that are having daily battles.”
Of training in their local area, Morgan said: “We are looking forward to the funny looks we will have when we take our cut-outs out for a run in our small hometown.”
Richard and Morgan will be joined by 164 other runners who aim to collectively raise £400,000 for JDRF. A total of 40,000 will be running the route from Greenwich to The Mall.
