It was a disappointing start to the season for the Tenby Youth side. Disappointing, not only because of the scoreline of 27 points to nil in Whitland's favour, but because of the way the game was played. Teams can now opt for uncontested scrums from the outset, taking away what has always been a major competitive area unique to the rugby union game. The rule is there to protect our young players from injury. Young Geoff Martin was selected by the players to captain the side for the 2004/05 season. The team has again benefited from the club's junior rugby set-up, with talented players moving up through the age groups to make their debut for the Youth. Steve Handicott, Ben Field-Thomas, John Feneck all made excellent contributions in the backline, along with Mathew Davies and Miller on the wings. Rhys Thomas has established himself in the scrum-half position. Young Nick Drewett had an excellent game at hooker, along with props Geoff Martin and Marvin Thomas, with Laurence Britts and Alex Jenkins in the 'power-house'. Sam Smith at number eight, with Tom James and Mike Cockburn on the flanks, made up the very formidable pack. Aled Griffiths gave a solid performance at fullback, covering well. Both substitutes, Dan Young and Craig MaGee, came on to show what they could do and had good games. Whitland rucked and mauled as if their lives depended on it and looked the far fitter and more organised side, having played together before. Tenby have some way to go and it can only be done in training at the Clicketts on a Thursday evening at 7 pm, but the talent is there and the future of Tenby rugby looks excellent. Many thanks to Lynn and Chris Jenkins from the golf club for the match balls.
