A telegram from Her Majesty The Queen was one of many congratulatory cards received by Tenby couple, Alan and Doreen Hodgson, on the occasion of their diamond wedding anniversary.

Married at St. John's Church, Cardiff, on November 7, 1942, Alan and Doreen, of Shackley, St. John's Croft, first met at a dance in Cardiff City Hall.

At the time of their marriage, Alan was serving in the RAF, while Doreen worked for the South Wales Electricity Board at St. Mellons.

After the war, Alan also joined the South Wales Electricity Board and the couple moved to Tenby in 1952.

Alan, a qualified first aider with the St. John Ambulance, later worked in the South Beach Pavilion for many years, before becoming a wayleave officer, which took him out around the Pembrokeshire countryside.

The couple have one daughter, Elaine, who lives in Leeds with her husband Mike, and two grandchildren, Darren and Penny, both now married and living in Manchester and Leeds, respectively.

Penny is expecting a baby in April and Alan and Doreen are anxiously awaiting the birth of their first great-grandchild.

Both members of St. Mary's Church, Tenby, prayers of thanksgiving were said for Alan and Doreen's marriage by the curate, Rev. Bonnie Timothy, last Thursday.

The couple also marked their anniversary with a lunch for family and close friends on Saturday.

Doreen is actively involved with the Townswomen's Guild and over the years has held every office on the committee and currently is the guild's president. She is also a member of the St. Mary's Mothers' Union and enjoys handicraft-making and oil painting, while Alan's hobbies have included fishing, sailing, DIY and photography.

When asked for their recipe for a happy marriage, Doreen felt it was a "little bit of give and take" and "having an interest in your own hobbies" that had contributed to their 60 happy years.
