CONGRATULATIONS to David and Doreen Hughes, of Kesteven Court, Carew, who celebrated their diamond wedding anniversary yesterday (Thursday). David, who hails from Rhos, near Slebech, and Doreen, a native of Carew, met in October, 1945, at the Pembroke Fair, the first time the event was held following the war. David worked for the Pembrokeshire War Agricultural Committee, starting out with the company at 17 years of age as a lorry driver, then going on to work for W. J. Harries, which was the quarrying and haulage family business set up and run by the grandfather and father of Doreen (nee Harries). The couple, who married at Carew Newton Congregational Chapel, lived in the village for 33 years at Flemish House, where they also ran the shop, then lived for 10 years in Whitehill, before moving to their current home in Kesteven Court, where they have been since 1990. W. J. Harries went on to become known as haulage distributors Hughes and John, which it is still run as today under David and Dawn's son and daughter- in-law, Keith and Gaynor Hughes, and daughter and son-in-law, Gaynor and Peter John. David continued to work at the company until his retirement in the late 1980s. The couple have four grandchildren, Lisa, Gareth, Anna-Marie and Christopher, and one great- grandson, Charlie. Doreen is a member of Carew Wesley Chapel and enjoys knitting and reading, while David enjoys watching sport, especially rugby. They are both also keen gardeners. As well as expecting a special telegram from Her Majesty The Queen to mark the occasion, the couple will be attending a celebration lunch with the family at Lamphey Court Hotel over the weekend.
