Sir,

Please may I make an appeal to your readers by means of your 'letters column'. Lately I have started work on the Pembrokeshire Dialect Project on behalf of Menter Iaith Sir Benfro (Pembrokeshire Welsh language Initiative). Funding from the Heritage Fund of the National Lottery supports the work until 2014. The project aims to: a. research the dialect of our county, both north and south of the Landsker Line, in Welsh and English; b. record different examples of our dialect; c. provide resources so that schools, communities and social groups can better understand the history of our dialect, learning to value and use it; d. produce a website, DVD or booklet as a lasting resource.

Many school children have already been involved with the project, producing a textile wall hanging of Pembrokeshire, which incorporates words and phrases used in dialect. I appeal to any schools who would like to become involved with hands-on, creative activity on a 'dialect' theme, to contact me. The art work produced will be displayed at the Urdd Eisteddfod in Pembrokeshire in 2013.

I would also like to appeal to Observer readers who might be interested. I would welcome examples of prose or verse in dialect. There are many, many examples still in existence since the days of the village eisteddfod or country fairs. Also, many old-fashioned sayings, which have fallen from favour in recent years, give valuable colour to the way we speak. They are easily lost and forgotten.

I would be delighted to hear from any readers who would be interested in discussing their local dialect with me. Also, if you know of local people who speak using local vocabulary, who would not mind being recorded, please contact me
