As the campaign to prevent closure of Narberth Swimming Pool gathers momentum, the Friends of Narberth Pool are delighted to announce that the deadline has been extended by several weeks to allow the cabinet of Pembrokeshire County Council to review the closure recommendation which will be made if the target is not met. This news comes as the total of pledges and donations approaches £55,000 and marks a time of high profile publicity and successful fundraising during Narberth Civic Week. Narberth Mayor and chair of the action group, Clr. Mrs. Sue Rees, said: "Time is running out for the community pledges for investment which will help save Narberth Swimming Pool. The pool's campaigners, under the umbrella of SwimNarberth, are battling to reach a £200,000 cash target - of both money in the bank and promised funds - to enable them to take over the facility from Pembrokeshire County Council. "Although there has been a superb response to fundraising and the request for promises of cash and share purchases, SwimNarberth urgently needs further pledges to enable the goal to be realised and the group is emphasising that at the moment it is the promise of cash, and not the actual money, which is crucial to the pool's future." Clr. Mrs. Rees continued: "There seems to be some confusion about when and how to contribute to the pool funds. We don't have to have the cash in the bank yet, but we do need people to say they will invest, and let us know how much, so that we can add it to our total. We are very grateful for all donations and fundraising activities, which have done a fantastic job, but if we are to reach our target of £200,000, we need people to invest in the pool, in the same way as they would invest in any other type of shares." The predicted interest rate is between three and six per cent, and if all goes well, after three years, shares could be sold back. Forms are available from Nobles, Jack Williams, Spar and Andrew Rees Butchers in Narberth to notify SwimNarberth of how much investment can be made - a minimum of £200 and a maximum of £20,000. And Clr. Mrs. Rees appealed to the community: "Please let us know you intend to invest as much as you can and help us to show Pembrokeshire County Council that the people of the Narberth area do intend to save their pool." Cash and pledges are currently approaching £55,000, and the cause has also been boosted with a generous £36,000 three-year sponsorship package from Princes Gate Water Trust towards running costs. FOOTNOTE: Pool supporters, lifeguards and friends put the fun into fundraising when they built a float for the Narberth Carnival and won £100 the prize for best large float in the process. Thanks to all who helped, including Templeton Wines who provided the vehicle and to the Narberth Rugby Club who won second prize and immediately donated their prize money to the pool fund.
