There was great excitement and anticipation from the Pembrokeshire Dawn Walkers who set off from Withybush Hospital at 6 am on Sunday.

A total of 60 people took part and walked from Haverfordwest, through The Rhos, Slebech Park, Blackpool Mill, Yerbeston, Cresswell Quay, West Williamston, Carew Newton, and finally, after 26.2 miles ended up at Cresselly Cricket Club, where there was a tremendous reception awaiting them.

The barbecue and party went on all afternoon as more walkers returned, braving the incredible heat of the day. A marathon effort in more ways than one!

This was a fantastic community occasion, with so many different businesses and individuals contributing time, food, water, support, money and various supplies - there have been virtually no costs incurred as everything has been donated, which means all the sponsorship money, entry fees and money raised at the barbecue can go straight to the beneficiaries Withybush Hospital Cancer Services.

At the moment, the estimated amount raised is an incredible £16,000.

But, it's not too late to make a donation, if you would like to contribute, please contact Alison Lewis on 01646 651235.

"There are so many contributors to thank Bakaway, Bookers, Bronwen's of Saundersfoot, Carew Inn, Floatation Balloons, Heywoods of Saundersfoot, Joss Griffiths Butchers, Kilgetty Co-op, Liz's Bakery, Manchester Colour Labs, Geoffrey and Georgina Phillips, Princes Gate Water, Radio Pembrokeshire, Ross Grieve Photography, Sign Speed, Skelfayre, Southwest Photomounts, Swallow Tree, Tees 'R Us, Tesco, The Body Shop, Upton Farm, Wisebuys and Yerbeston Farm Shop," said a spokesperson for the walkers.

"If we have missed someone off this list, please accept our apologies - and a special thank you!"

Additionally, a big thank you goes to the marshals and helpers on the day, whose efforts and support made a huge difference to the smooth running (or walking!) of the day.

"It has been such an amazing experience; quite emotional and overwhelming, but fantastic to be part of such a tremendous community effort," continued the spokesperson.

"The whole thing has been great fun: keeping fit by walking, very sociable and raising money at the same time! Definitely a winning combination."

The Dawn Walk has been so successful that there have been many suggestions that it becomes an annual event - watch this space!
